HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Spring Hill College softball team swept a neutral site non-conference doubleheader from the LSU-Alexandria Generals by the scores of 7-0 in the first game and 9-7 in eight innings on Friday afternoon at Fail Field.
Spring Hill outmuscled the Generals (15-17) by a 14-to-2 margin in the hits category of the first game as freshman starter Caroline Sagrera went the distance with 14 strikeouts and four walks. Badger junior second baseman Raleigh Downs was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI while sophomore right fielder Shea Blanchard, sophomore catcher Jade Bourgeois and senior left fielder Katelyn Hinson each had a pair of hits.
The Badgers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 2½ innings in the second game, but SHC starter sophomore Kathryn Ingles allowed a pair of runs in both the 3rd and 4th frames before being relieved by Sagrera (13-0) with two outs and the bases loaded in the 4th inning. Sagrera induced LSUA left fielder Jessie Reyes into a fly ball to left to end the threat and added the win in relief in 4.1 innings with four hits, two walks and eight more strikeouts.
Spring Hill exploded for five runs in the top of 8th inning with freshman shortstop Sam Leach providing the heroics when she doubled to deep left-center with the bases loaded for the first three runs.
The Generals scored three runs in the bottom of the frame, but Sagrera struck out LSUA first baseman Kelsey Jagneaux with the tying runs at 2nd and 3rd bases to end the game.
Senior third baseman Mariha Partman and Bourgeois each had three hits in the nightcap with Partman collecting a triple to lead off the 3rd inning followed immediately by Bourgeois driving her in with a double.
Spring Hill (20-3) will next open the Southern States Athletic Conference schedule with a home doubleheader versus the Belhaven University Lady Blazers (9-2) on Tuesday at 1 p.m. on Murray Field.
