MT. VERNON, Ga. – The Spring Hill College baseball team reached a split decision in a conference road doubleheader at Brewton-Parker College falling 1-0 in the opening game, but rebounding to take the nightcap 6-5 on Friday afternoon.
The Barons (11-7, 5-3 SSAC) allowed Badger runners to reach base in every inning of the opening game, but fended off the Badgers on each occasion as a run scored on a passed ball in the 3rd inning proved to be the game winner for BPC. Senior starter Nick Schmiemeier (2-2) was the tough-luck loser for Spring Hill.
The nightcap was a see-saw affair with SHC holding a 4-2 lead after 6½ innings, but the Barons rallying to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of 7th inning. Spring Hill freshman third baseman Willie Floros provided the big hit in the top of the 9th with a bases-loaded, 2-RBI single to put SHC up for good.
Junior second baseman Brian Sims had four hits on the day while Floros had three safeties. Freshman Johnathan Billings (2-3) was the winner in relief and sophomore Keller Douglas nailed down his fourth save of the year.
The Badgers (9-14, 4-7 SSAC) will wrap up this 3-game set at BPC with a single game on Saturday at a 1 p.m.
