COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Spring Hill College softball Badgers fell to 3rd-ranked Lee University 1-0 in the championship game of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship Tournament at R.G. Jones Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Flames advanced a potential go-ahead runner to third with two outs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, but freshman All-Conference pitcher Caroline Sagrera (31-8) coaxed designated player Lexie Dean into an inning ending groundout to senior Mariha Partman at 3rd base to keep the game scoreless.
Lee (44-9) took a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning when first baseman Ana Coscorrosa drove a run-scoring double into right field.
Spring Hill put the tying run at 3nd base with two outs in the top of the 7th inning following a walk to sophomore catcher Jade Bourgeois and a single up the middle by freshman designated player Taylor Lahasky, but a strikeout would end the contest and give Lee the 2013 SSAC Tournament title.
Starter Caroline MacAusland (13-4) of Lee limited the Badgers to just two hits in the game with two walks and seven strikeouts. Sagrera allowed the Lady Flames five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The 15th-ranked Badgers (41-14) will now wait to see where they will be assigned to play in the Opening Round of NAIA National Championship Tournament that will begin on Monday, May 13, 2013, at 10 sites around the nation.
