The Spring Hill College softball team lost to sixth ranked William Carey University in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Softball Tournament on Friday evening by the score of 5-0.
WCU starter Kelsey Jo Smith went the distance for the shutout victory giving up just three hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
For Spring Hill (15-31), Lauren Crane fell to 5-5 on the year lasting just 3.1 innings with five hits, four walks and three strikeouts.
The Crusaders (36-6) were led at the plate by a 2-for-3 performance by Judy Barber while Jill Wedgeworth drilled a 2-run homer in the 1st inning.   Jeana Erickson added a 2-run single in the 4th inning for the final runs of the night.
SHC will play Belhaven College in an elimination game at 10 a.m. on Saturday.  WCU moves into the winner's bracket versus Mobile with a 12:15 p.m. game.
