Belhaven College stayed alive at the 2009 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Softball Tournament by dropping Spring Hill 4-0 in an elimination game.
Ashley Mottola (13-7) picked up the win for Belhaven by tossing a complete-game, six-hit shutout. Samantha Brooks (8-13) took the loss for Spring Hill after allowing three earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
Both teams were shutout in yesterday's tournament action and it took 2.5 innings Saturday for either team to put a tally on the scoreboard. Spring Hill stranded eight runners in the game including four over the first three innings. Belhaven, meanwhile, went down in order over the first 2.1 innings.
With two outs and runners on first and second in the 3rd inning, the Lady Blazers finally picked up the key hits. Jessica Eggold, Heather Pace and Mallory Meadows went back-to-back-to-back with RBI singles on three consecutive pitches to put Belhaven up 3-0.
Heather Pace finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Kayla Maldonado finished 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Lauren Crane finished 2-for-4 for Spring Hill, while Jessica Whidden finished 2-for-2.
Belhaven (35-18) will face the loser of the Mobile/William Carey game at 2:30 pm, while Spring Hill closes out the season at 15-32.
