The Spring Hill College women's soccer team opened the 2009 season with a 2-1 victory over the Golden Tigers of Brenau University on Saturday at Library Field. Sophomore forward Katie Pendergast of St. Louis, Mo., punched in the rebound of a blocked shot at the 76:26 mark to break a 1-1 deadlock.
Spring Hill opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a goal by junior Lara Menke of Washington, Mo., who knocked in a perfectly placed right-side corner kick off the foot of freshman Sara Uptmor from Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Lady Badgers completely controlled the first half, but opened the second half a bit sluggishly and allowed Brenau (0-1-1) to tie the contest in the 55th minute with a set piece goal from 30 yards out by freshman Tori Futrell following a foul by SHC senior defenseman Allison Giles. Spring showed some signs of confusion with their assignments and Futrell lifted an arcing shot over the wall and past the SHC keeper.
Junior Emma Pitchford of Ridgeland, Miss., picked up the first win of her career in her first career start while making seven saves versus 12 Brenau shot attempts.
Sophomore Lisa Lesnick took the loss making four saves versus 13 SHC shot attempts.
The decision gave SHC Interim Head Coach Daniel Whelan his first career victory as a collegiate head coach.
The Spring Hill College (1-0) women next play NAIA newcomer Truett-McConnell College from Cleveland, Ga., on Friday at 3 p.m. at Library Field in the opening match of the 3rd Annual Spring Hill Invitational.
