The Spring Hill College men's soccer team opened the 2009 season with a hard-fought 2-0 loss at No. 18 Auburn-Montgomery. The decision marked the debut of SHC Interim Head Coach Daniel Whelan.
The Senators opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a set piece play following a foul by SHC's Collin Gasparovich that saw Bogi Einarsson accept a pass from Stefan Arnarson and rip a shot past SHC keeper Dan Criscione.
AUM (2-0) added the second goal just three minutes later when a shot rebounded off the crossbar over Criscione and Arnar Thordarson poked the ball past a still airborne Criscione.
The second half was a rain-soaked defensive struggle that saw a physical battle between the two sides with limited offense plays.
The Senators out shot the Badgers 22-2 and took 11 corner kicks to just one for Spring Hill.
Criscione picked up nine saves in goal while Steve Keller had one for AUM in the shutout.
Spring Hill (0-1) will next host NAIA newcomer Truett-McConnell College at 5:30 on Friday in the second match of the 3rd Annual Spring Hill Invitational.
