The Spring Hill College men's soccer team snapped an on-field losing skid of 14 matches with a 3-1 conference victory over LSU-Shreveport on Tuesday night at Library Field.
SHC senior Zechariah Townsend of Middleburg, Fla., opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a goal over the head of the Pilot keeper off assists from junior Deven Arnold from Mobile's W.P. Davidson High School and sophomore Bryce Privett from Fairhope's Bayside Academy.
LSU-S (3-4-1, 0-1 GCAC) answered back in the second period, however, with a penalty kick goal in the 57th minute by Zach Kelly following a foul in the box by SHC sophomore John Tanner of Gulf Shores High School.
Arnold drove home the game-winning goal in the 80th minute off a put-back of a rebounded shot and sophomore forward Gable Fortune of St. Louis, Mo., iced the game in the 83rd minute by stepping in front of a Pilot pass and beating the goalkeeper one-on-one.
Junior keeper Cory Bronenkamp of St. Louis made seven saves versus 12 LSU-S shot attempts while across the field Celaya Rogerio made six saves against 19 SHC shot attempts. Spring Hill took five corner kicks to just four for LSU-S.
Despite picking up a forfeit from Talladega College earlier this month, Spring Hill's on-field losing streak dated back to a 1-1 tie with Trevecca Nazarene University on October 11, 2008. SHC had not won a match in 19 attempts dating back to a 5-0 win over Florida College on September 19, 2008.
Spring Hill (2-9, 1-0 GCAC) will next play conference foe No. 18 William Carey University (6-2-2, 0-0 GCAC) in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m.
