Union College came into Friday's match at Spring Hill College boasting a gaudy 9-0 record, but the Lady Badgers took a 2-1 victory away from Library Field after a two-overtime marathon.
Spring Hill scored first in the 49th minute when freshman Sara Uptmor of Cape Girardeau, Mo., lifted a beautiful crossing pass into sophomore Katie Pendergast from St Louis, Mo., who headed the goal into the upper-right corner.
Union (9-1), however, would not be intimidated by the deficit and answered in the 71st minute off a set piece following a Spring Hill foul. Renata Peixoto lofted a perfectly place shot over the wall that found the upper-left corner of the goal with a lovely bending shot.
The end of regulation and the first overtime found the match still tied at one, but SHC would end the contest in the 107th minute when Abby Galen scored a penalty kick goal following a UC foul in the box.
SHC keeper junior Emma Pitchford of Ridgeland, Miss., made five saves against 10 Union shot attempts while Brittany Puryear made 11 saves versus 26 Spring Hill shot attempts.
SHC took 12 corner kicks and allowed just three to Union.
Spring Hill (5-5-1, 0-1-1 GCAC) will next travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to face conference foe No. 7 William Carey University (9-1-1) at 5 p.m.
