The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that Spring Hill College volleyball players Melissa Williams of Fairhope, Ala., and Emily Williams from Mobile's Murphy High School have been named 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Volleyball Scholar-Athletes.
Melissa, a senior Elementary Education major, was the two-time Gulf Coast Athletic Conference "Libero of the Year" in 2008 and 2009 while recording over 2,100 digs in her career. Melissa has also appeared on the GCAC Academic Honor Roll and the Dean's List at SHC.
Emily, a junior outside hitter majoring in Biology/Pre-Health, is also a member of the GCAC Academic Honor Roll and the SHC Dean's List. This past season she collected 53 kills 120 digs, 15 total blocks and seven service aces.
Nominated by each institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify. This season a total of 304 volleyball players were awarded the honor by the NAIA.
Since 1989, 98 Spring Hill College student-athletes have won NAIA Scholar Athlete recognition.
