The Spring Hill College women's basketball team took an 81-59 downturn at the hands of the William Carey University Lady Crusaders on Thursday afternoon at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
The first half was a nip and tuck affair as Carey (4-6, 1-0 GCAC) could not find a way to pull away from a pesky group of Badgers and held a slim 36-33 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, however, Spring Hill's hot shooting hands cooled off and the Lady Crusaders built out a 20-point advantage at 60-40 with 11 minutes remaining.
Senior guard Kristi Ybarra of Gulf Shores, Ala., scored 17 points to lead Spring Hill and senior Robynetta Hargrave added 14 points. Junior forward Lynleigh Hughes pitched in 13 points and nine rebounds as well.
For Carey, Kim Lewis enjoyed a 22-point performance and Alisha Mason contributed 19 points. Consuela Tucker also had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Crusaders.
Overall, the Badgers were 19-61 (31.1%) from the field and 7-20 (35%) from 3-point distance. WCU made 32 of their 65 shots (49.2%) and hit five of their 14 (35.7%) 3-point attempts.
The Lady Badgers were out rebounded 45-33 and committed 17 turnovers to 16 by the visitors from Hattiesburg, Miss.
Spring Hill (2-9, 0-1 GCAC) will next host Southern University-New Orleans (5-0, 0-0 GCAC) on Saturday night at 5:30 p.m.
