Spring Hill College Head Volleyball Coach Peggy Martin today announced Savannah Simmons of Daphne, Ala., as her first student-athlete signing since taking over the Badger reins.
Simmons, a product of Coach Ann Schilling's program at Bayside Academy, was a 2-time Class 3A State Tournament Most Valuable Player in her junior and senior seasons and the Mobile Press-Register Player of the Year in 2009.
The 5'11" middle blocker is a 4-year varsity letter winner in volleyball at Bayside. Simmons was named Alabama All State in her junior and senior years and was selected for the Alabama All Star team as a junior. As a senior she was a member of the Birmingham News All State squad and was also twice named a member of the state's "Super 12" team.
At Bayside, Simmons was a member of four State Championship volleyball teams and active in numerous other sports and activities. She earned a varsity letter in swimming as a freshman and placed second at the State Track & Field Meet in Javelin as a junior.
The International Friesian Show Horse Association (IFSHA) ranked Simmons fourth in the nation in Dressage during her junior year.
Away from athletics, Simmons is active in her church Youth Group, helps as a Church Nursery Volunteer, serves on the Daphne Library Teen Board and has been an Honor Roll student for the past two years. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), serves as a counselor with Peer Counseling and participates in Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD).
Simmons is also co-founder of Teen PowerSurge 100 which is a non-profit Christian Teen volunteer organization of over 300 members that raises funds for Christian-based education, social ministries, teen activities and women's ministries in their local communities.
Martin said, "I am thrilled to add Savannah as my first recruit here at SHC. I believe it is extremely important to recruit the best of our local talent and I rate Savannah as one of the top players in the State of Alabama, in the region, as well as in the Mobile area. With Savannah's winning experience at Bayside Academy, she is the type of person and athlete that we believe will be the cornerstone of the SHC program and we will look to build around her. Hopefully, we will be adding more local talent from the other volleyball powers in Mobile, but Savannah was targeted as our Number One priority for this recruiting class and we are very excited that she chose SHC."
