Spring Hill College took its season opening series with LSU-Shreveport 2-games-to-1 with a decisive 9-4 victory over the Pilots on Sunday afternoon at Stan Galle Field.

With the score knotted at 1 run each in the second, senior right fielder Ryan Hall ripped a run-scoring single into left field and Kendell Carvin from Murphy High scored a run off a wild pitch by LSUS pitcher Jared Mata (0-1) to give the Badgers a 3-1 advantage.

SHC broke open the game with a 3-run fourth inning that included a 2-RBI double down the left field line by sophomore shortstop Ryan Cummings of McGill-Toolen.

No. 18 ranked LSUS (1-2, 1-2 GCAC) answered with three runs in the fifth inning sparked by a run-scoring double to right-center by catcher Andrew Brouillette.

The Badgers responded to the threat with a run in the bottom of the same frame when third baseman Blake Nelson from W.P. Davidson drove Carvin in from third with a single.  Spring Hill continued to build their lead in the eighth with two insurance runs when Carvin slipped a single into center field past a diving Pilot second baseman.

Carvin ended his first day in SHC purple with a 3-for-4 performance including two RBI and two runs scored.  Cummings also had three hits on the day with three RBI while Hall had two hits and a run driven in.  All told, the Badgers pounded out 13 hits on the afternoon.

On the mound, Joe Carter of Alma Bryant High worked 4.2 innings with four earned runs, two strikeouts and six walks.  Stephen Herrington of Mary Montgomery High picked up his first career win in 4.1 innings of relief with no runs allowed, three strikeouts and one walk.  In the seventh, Herrington pitched out a base-loaded jam when he coaxed David Morgan into popping out to shallow right field.

The Pilots used four different pitchers with the starter Mata lasting three innings and allowing five earned runs off two walks and three strikeouts.

Spring Hill (2-1, 2-1 GCAC) will next play conference foe Tougaloo College at 4 p.m. this Friday on Stan Galle Field.  On Saturday, the same two teams will square off for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
