The Spring Hill College baseball team completed a 3-game conference series sweep of the Tougaloo College Bulldogs by taking a rare Sunday contest 11-1 at historic Stan Galle Field.
A run-scoring double down the right field line by shortstop Ryan Cummings opened the scoring for Spring Hill as the Badgers jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after the first frame.
The 3-run third inning was highlighted by an RBI bunt single by Andy McCall followed later in the inning by a single to right by third baseman Blake Nelson that drove in McCall.
In the fourth, the Badgers continued to pour on the damage with four more runs capped by McCall's 2-RBI triple to deep right-center.
A single run in the sixth inning followed by a McCall sacrifice fly to right-center in the seventh ended the game on the 10-run "Mercy Rule" at an 11-1 final count.
McCall enjoyed a 3-for-4 afternoon for SHC with five RBI and three runs scored. Cummings also picked up three hits with two RBI and two runs scored while first baseman Brad Holstein added two more safeties with two runs scored. In total, the Badgers combined for 11 hits and played errorless ball in the field.
Tougaloo (0-3, 0-3 GCAC) managed to scratch out four hits against SHC starter Joe Carter (1-0) who went five innings with no walks, a strikeout and one earned run. Stephen Herrington pitched the final two innings allowing one hit with a walk and a strikeout.
Shermain Page (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs with eight earned runs allowed, three walks and three strikeouts in three innings.
Spring Hill (5-1, 5-1 GCAC) will step out of conference on Tuesday afternoon as the No. 23 ranked Auburn-Montgomery Senators (3-3) come to Stan Galle Field for a 4 p.m. contest.
