The Spring Hill College women's basketball team lost a 69-62 conference game at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) on Monday.
The Badgers trailed 38-37 at the halftime intermission after a closely contest first half in which SHC held a 35-28 advantage with 3:23 showing on the clock only to see SUNO respond with a 10-2 burst to close the period.
SUNO continued to roll coming out of the locker rooms and promptly launched a 10-3 run that resulted in 48-40 score five minutes into the second half.
Spring Hill's deficit had grown to as much as 15 points seven minutes later at 61-46, but the Badgers would not go away quietly. A late rally cut the score to 65-57 with only three minutes remaining and then a 3-point basket by Jackie Higgenbotham less than a minute later left the score at 67-60 in favor of the Lady Knights.
Steals by SUNO on two consecutive SHC trips down the court in less than 30 seconds effectively ended the threat as SUNO held on for the 69-62 victory.
Junior forward Lynleigh Hughes for Spring Hill was the game's high scorer with 16 points while sophomore forward Jackie Higgenbotham had 15 points. Senior guard Robynetta Hargrave pitched in 12 points and pulled in a team-high eight rebounds.
SUNO (11-7, 5-7 GCAC) was led by guard Tyesha Robinson with 15 points and Jazzlyn Prince put in 11 points for the Lady Knights. LaTiondra Smith corralled a game-high 12 rebounds for SUNO.
SHC shot 36.2% (21-58) from the field and 41.2% (7-17) from 3-point land while the Lady Knights knocked down 44.4% (28-63) of their shots and 37.5% (6-16) of their 3-pointers.
SUNO out-rebounded SHC by a 43 to 33 margin and the Badgers committed 15 turnovers in the face of 11 SUNO steals. SHC took the ball away just eight times, resulting in a total of 17 SUNO turnovers.
Spring Hill (2-20, 0-12 GCAC) will next travel to Jackson, Miss., to play the Lady Bulldogs of Tougaloo College (11-11, 7-4 GCAC) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
