The Spring Hill College men's basketball team snapped a 7-game losing skid on Saturday night with an 80-72 home win over Dillard University.
SHC led 41-32 at halftime and kept the Bleu Devils at arm's length for most of the second half until Dillard cut the Badgers' advantage to 59-57 with 8:21 remaining.
The Badgers then regrouped via the accurate mid-range shooting of sophomore guard Jacolby Griffin and a strong inside presence by junior center Nick Brown and junior forward Sylvester Twiggs to build out a 68-59 bulge at the five minute mark, but Dillard once again answered with a late charge.
A 3-point bucket by Dillard's Autrail Manning at 1:07 made the score 75-72 in favor of the Badgers, but a 2-point jumper by senior guard Marcus Coleman followed by successful free throws by sophomore guard Tyler Schwab and senior guard Patrick Grant ended all hope of a Bleu Devil upset.
Senior guard Marcus Coleman scored a team-high 18 points while Brown dropped in 14 points. Twiggs came off the bench to put 12 points in the basket and Grant pitched in 11 more.
Coleman is now just six points shy of scoring 1,500 points in his career.
Mico Sjekloca scored a game-high 21 points for Dillard and Autrail Manning added 16 points for the Bleu Devils. Cornice Wingate also had 10 points for the visitors.
SHC shot 55% (33-60) from the field and 31.3% (5-16) from 3-point land while Dillard made 24-of-56 (42.9%) shots and shot 40% (8-20) from 3-point territory.
The Badgers controlled the boards for most of the night taking down 38 rebounds and allowing Dillard 33 boards. The Badgers turned the ball over 13 times and Dillard gave it away 15 times.
Spring Hill (11-12, 5-9 GCAC) will next host Belhaven University (20-6, 10-4 GCAC) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
