The Spring Hill College women's basketball team snapped a 14-game losing skid with a 53-51 home victory over conference foe Belhaven University on Thursday night.
Going into the half, the Badgers held a slim 23-19 lead, but saw Belhaven bolt out to a 35-28 bulge five minutes into the second period.
The Badgers kept hammering away and whittled the deficit down to one point at 49-48 with two minutes remaining. SHC freshman Kristin Rogers sank a layup with at 1:50 for the 51-50 lead and converted two free throws at 1:13 following a huge defensive rebound by senior Robynetta Hargrave.
A 2-point bucket by the Blazers' Brittany Carr with 58 seconds remaining made it a 52-51 Badger lead, but senior Kristi Ybarra made one of two free throws with just seven seconds showing. Jira Williams' final shot for the Blazers missed the mark as time expired giving the Badgers the 53-51 win.
SHC was led by senior guard Ybarra of Gulf Shores, Ala., with 16 points, including five 3-point baskets while Rogers scored 14 points and junior forward Lynleigh Hughes had 11 points. Hargrave led all rebounders with 10 boards.
Octavia Mullins led Belhaven with 13 points and Carr had 11 points for the Blazers (13-13, 4-11 GCAC).
As a team, the Badgers shot 41.7% (20-48) and 27.8% (5-18) from 3-point distance. The Blazers were 37.5% (21-56) overall and failed to make any of their five 3-point attempts.
SHC controlled the boards with a 39-32 advantage in rebounding, but still continued to be haunted by turnovers as they committed 23 fumbles against 13 BU steals. Belhaven made just 15 turnovers as the Badgers stole the ball seven times.
Spring Hill (3-22, 1-14 GCAC) will travel to LSU-Shreveport (18-5, 11-4 GCAC) on Saturday at 5 p.m.
