The Spring Hill College men's basketball team upset No. 23 Belhaven University 76-71 in a home conference match on Thursday night.
Spring Hill College jumped out to a 38-29 halftime and was holding a 16-point bulge at 61-45 with 7:43 remaining, but Belhaven showed why they entered the game nationally ranked by launching a 14-2 run over the next 2½ minutes to cut the score to 63-59 in favor of SHC.
The SHC big men of center Nick Brown and forwards Sylvester Twiggs and Owen McNally then stepped to the fore by making several key defensive plays and muscling their way inside for high percentage layups. Four consecutive free throws by Tyler Schwab and Marcus Coleman would salt the game away over the final 14 seconds.
The Badgers were led by senior guards Patrick Grant with 20 points and Coleman with 18 points. Coleman also passed the 1,500-points barrier for his career in the game as he now has scored 1,512 points in his four years at Spring Hill. McNally poured in another 14 points and eight rebounds for the Badgers.
Belhaven saw five players score in double figures as Bobby Grier, Woodie Howard, Krayleon Winston and Nathaniel Roche' each had 12 points and Larell Bailey added 11 points from the bench.
SHC shot 43.5% (27-62) from the field and 34.6% (9-26) from 3-point land while Belhaven was 41.4% (24-58) from the field and shot 22.2% (4-18) from 3-point territory.
The rebounding was even at 36 rebounds apiece while the Badgers turned the ball over 16 times and Belhaven gave it away 15 times.
Spring Hill (12-12, 6-9 GCAC) will next travel to No. 6 LSU-Shreveport (22-4, 12-3 GCAC) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
