The Spring Hill College baseball team took the opening game of a 3-game conference series with Loyola University by an 11-2 score at Segnette Field on Friday night.
The Badgers opened the game with a 2-run 1st inning off Loyola's Alex Wolf (1-1) as the first three Badger hitters reached on base hits and first baseman Brad Holstein drove in right fielder Ryan Hall from second with a double to the centerfield wall for the first run of the game.
Hall added a third run in the 2nd inning with a deep sacrifice fly to right-center that plated third baseman Blake Nelson.
SHC starter sophomore David Dupuy, Jr. (2-0) from McGill-Toolen Catholic cruised through the 1st inning and then got help from his defense in the 2nd when Hall gunned down the third out of the inning at home with a strong throw from deep right field.
In the 5th inning, Spring Hill tacked on two more runs when left fielder Andy McCall drove a triple to deep left that scored centerfielder Justin Harrison followed by a Wolf wild pitch that allowed McCall to scamper home.
Catcher Fred Rossi gave the Badgers a 7-1 advantage with a 2-run single to right-center in the 6th inning. Spring Hill would scratch out 3 more runs in the 8th inning.
Dupuy allowed just two hits in 6.1 innings of work with one earned run surrendered to go with two walks and five strikeouts. Reliever Joe Baumgartner surrender a solo homer to Kevin Fontenot in the 8th inning, but otherwise had a solid performance with three hits, two strikeouts and no walks over 2.2 innings.
Rossi, Hall and Holstein each enjoyed 3-hit, 2-RBI performances for the Badgers while McCall and designated hitter Kendell Carvin each contributed two hits to the Badgers' 16 total hits.
Spring Hill (6-2, 6-1 GCAC) and Loyola (3-4, 3-4 GCAC) will wrap up this series with a doubleheader at Segnette Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
