The Spring Hill College softball team lost both games at the final day of the Faulkner University Invitational in Montgomery, Ala., on Saturday. In the afternoon game, the Badgers fell 3-0 to Reinhardt College and dropped the evening game 4-1 versus host Faulkner University.
In the first game, Reinhardt's Sarah Brown was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple and the Eagles' Becca Jones went the distance in picking up the 3-0 shutout. Jones scattered nine Badger hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
For SHC, Monica Zeringue and Brooke Turlich each had a pair of hits and Sam Brooks (0-2) took her second complete-game loss of the year. Brooks allowed just five hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts and two walks allowed.
The tournament's late night finale with Faulkner saw the Eagles build out a 3-0 lead on SHC starter Lauren Crane (0-1) before Brittany Abate stepped in to stop the bleeding in the 3rd inning. Crane had two strikeouts with a walk before surrendering back-to-back doubles to leadoff the 3rd frame. Abate closed the game with four innings pitched, no earned runs and a strikeout.
At the plate, the shortstop Zeringue continued her season-opening hot streak by adding two more hits and a stolen base to her books. Jessica Edger also added two safeties including a double.
Eden Harris, Haley Munroe and Erin Pierce each had a pair of hits for Faulkner while Missy Duke collected the win and Katy Wiggins logged the save. Both Eagle hurlers struck out three Badger batters.
Spring Hill (0-4) will next travel to Livingston, Ala., on Saturday to face the University of West Alabama (7-3) for two games at 1 p.m. followed by a single game against Kentucky Wesleyan College (0-6) at 5:30 p.m.
