The Spring Hill College baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Hornets of Concordia College-Selma by the scores of 3-2 and 9-7 on Tuesday afternoon.
In the first game, senior Blake Nelson collected two hits and an RBI as the Badgers tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the 6th inning, added two more runs in top of the 7th, and then held one to win 3-2 after surrendering a run in the bottom of the frame.
Senior Mike Scanio (1-0) recorded his first win of the season and scattered eight hits with three walks and a strikeout.
The nightcap saw the Spring Hill bats wake up as four Badgers tallied three hits each. Nelson continued to be hot with a 3-for-5 evening as did junior third baseman Bobby Voss and sophomore shortstop Ryan Cummings. Junior first baseman Brad Holstein's three hits included a homerun and three RBI while senior Andy McCall also cranked a 2-run blast of his own.
Freshman righty James Maughn (1-0) took home his first career win in five innings pitched with six hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Senior Phillip Stewart picked up his first save of the year.
Spring Hill (10-2, 8-1 GCAC) will put its current 5-game winning streak on the line versus the Thomas University (Ga.) Night Hawks (7-5) in a 3-game non-conference series at Stan Galle Field beginning with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
