The Spring Hill College softball team picked up its first win of the 2010 campaign on Saturday night with a 9-1 victory over NCAA Division II opponent Kentucky Wesleyan College in Livingston, Ala.
With the game scoreless through three innings of play, KWC (0-7) broke the drought with a sacrifice fly by Clarissa Smith in the top of the 4th inning, but SHC answered in the bottom of the frame with a Monica Zeringue leadoff homer to knot the score at 1 run each.
In the 5th inning, Ersy Pacheco ripped a 2-run homer to give the Badgers the lead. Then in the 6th inning, Spring Hill opened the flood gates by exploding for six runs off five hits, including run-scoring doubles by shortstop Zeringue and pitcher Brittany Abate. Abate's hit would end the game via the 8-run "Mercy Rule."
SHC collected 10 hits in total with Zeringue's pair leading the pack, but closely followed by freshman Haley Brown's two safeties.
On the mound, Abate (1-0) limited KWC to seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk in the complete-game victory.
Spring Hill (1-6) will host Notre Dame College (Ohio) in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 1 p.m. on Murray Field.
