The Belhaven University Blazers completed a 3-game conference sweep of the Spring Hill College Badgers by taking both halves of a Saturday doubleheader by the scores of 8-4 and 14-7 at Smith-Wills Stadium.
In the first game, the Badgers twice rallied with 2-run innings in the 2nd and 4th frames, but Belhaven (16-3, 9-2 GCAC) regained control with a 2-run bursts in the bottom of the 4th and the 5th innings to secure the 8-4 victory.
Starter Joe Baumgartner (0-2) took the loss for the Badgers going four innings with three hits, one walk and three strikeouts. At the plate, catcher Fred Rossi had a single with a run batted in.
Ryan Kassab was Belhaven's winner with four innings of work and allowing three hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Golden Grasse picked up the save for Blazers with no hits, no walks and three strikeouts in three innings. Timmy Foster and Derek Tortorich each homered for the Blazers.
The second game found the Badgers holding a 5-4 lead in the 6th inning before the Blazers erupted for a 7-run outburst in the bottom of the frame.
Brad Holstein recorded a 3-for-3 game for Spring Hill while Ryan Hall, Blake Nelson and Bobby Voss each added two hits to their totals.
Senior Nick Clapper (0-1) accepted the loss in 5.1 innings of work with nine hits, no walks, three strikeouts and homeruns to both Lake Eiland and Kyle Feazell of Belhaven.
The Blazers' Paul Faulkenberry was the winner in relief of starter Alan McHenry. Faulkenberry went four innings and allowed four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Belhaven batters pounded out 14 hits in the nightcap led by Jimmy Gilford with three hits and two RBI. Five other Blazers enjoyed 2-hits games, as well.
Spring Hill (12-8, 8-4 GCAC) will host non-conference opponent Lyon College (8-5) from Batesville, Ark., on Monday at Stan Galle Field beginning at 6 p.m.
