The Spring Hill College softball team swept a doubleheader from the previously undefeated Birmingham-Southern College Panthers on Tuesday afternoon at Murray Field by the scores of 4-3 and 5-1.
In the first game, shortstop Monica Zeringue lifted a walk-off 1-out double into deep left-center to score the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the 7th inning as the Badgers rallied from a 3-run deficit.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the 4th inning, designated player Kayla McCraney from Mobile Christian started the rally with a solo homer to left field. SHC then scratched out a second run in the 5th inning off Zeringue's first double of the day that plated Mallory Sullivan.
Samantha Brooks (4-8) picked up the complete-game victory allowing just five hits, two earned runs and two walks with four strikeouts. Zeringue was 3-for-3 with three RBI and Sullivan was 2-for-2 at the plate.
Ronni Ferris (6-1) took the loss for the Panthers going 6.1 innings with seven hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. Ferris also had a double at the plate and Brittany Berkopec added a single with an RBI for BSC.
The second game saw Spring Hill's Brittany Abate (3-0) take a shutout down to the last out before BSC (10-2) dented the scoreboard with an unearned run by off a single by Ferris in the 7th inning, but the Badgers hung on for the 5-1 victory.
Abate went the distance giving up just four hits with no walks and four strikeouts while also adding two hits and an RBI to her offensive totals. Ersy Pacheco and McCraney also had a pair of hits each while Brooke Turlich had a single that drove in two runs in the Badgers 3-run 6th inning.
Tori Harris suffered the loss for the Panthers allowing 11 hits, three earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts.
Spring Hill (8-13) travels to Thomasville, Ga., on Friday and Saturday to face Thomas University and LSU-Alexandria at the Thomas University Invitational.
