The Spring Hill College baseball team lost 6-2 in the opening game of a 3-game conference set with Belhaven University on Friday night at Stan Galle Field.
The Blazers (28-10, 18-5 GCAC) held a slim 2-1 lead going into the 5th inning, but blew open the game with three runs off four hits in the frame to take a 5-1 advantage. Centerfielder Jimmy Gilford plated two runs with a 1-out single to right. The next batter, second baseman Lake Eiland, then brought in Gilford from second with a single back up the middle.
Brandt Hinton moved to 8-0 with the win for Belhaven with a complete game performance that allowed seven hits to SHC with one walk and two strikeouts.
David Dupuy fell to 3-5 for the Badgers lasting 4.1 innings with seven hits one walks and three strikeouts. Jeff Keenum closed things out for Spring Hill with 4.2 innings of work, six hits, one walk and one strikeout.
The pitching staffs of both teams benefited from three double plays turned behind them by their infields.
Designated Hitter Kendell Carvin from Murphy High led the Badgers with a 3-for-4 night including a double and two runs scored.
Shortstop Shawn Diehl collected three hits with a 9th inning triple Eiland and Gilford each had two hits for the Blazers.
Spring Hill (23-17, 12-12 GCAC) will host 15th-ranked Belhaven in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday at historic Stan Galle Field.
