The Spring Hill College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Thomas University (Ga.) on Saturday afternoon at Murray Field by taking the first game 9-0 in five innings and then falling to the Night Hawks 7-6 in extra innings in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Badgers need just 55 minutes to blast Thomas 9-0 in a game stopped after 5 innings due to the 8-run Mercy Rule. Sam Brooks (8-13) was the winner with her second shutout victory of the year. Brooks allowed just three hits with a walks and two strikeouts.
Brooks also collected three hits at the plate while Monica Zeringue, Brooke Turlich and Kayla McCraney each had two hits for the Badgers. Right fielder Ersy Pacheco also belted her sixth homer of the year off the foul pole.
Lauren Crane started the second game for SHC, but gave way to Brooks in the 4th inning. Crane allowed two hits, two walks and four runs including two unearned runs while Brooks took the loss in relief. Brooks surrendered five hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Pacheco continued to swing a hot bat going 3-for-5 while Crane added a 2-for-2 effort.
Spring Hill (16-21, 2-6 GCAC) will next host 9th-ranked Belhaven University (36-4, 9-1 GCAC) in a doubleheader this Monday at 1 p.m. on Murray Field.
