The Spring Hill College softball team upset the 7th-ranked Belhaven University Blazers 1-0 in the second game of a conference doubleheader at Murray Field on Monday afternoon. The Badgers lost the hard-fought first game 1-0 in extra-innings.
Sam Brooks (9-14) pitched all 15 innings of the doubleheader for the Badgers, allowing no earned runs with seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Brooks helped her own cause with a 1-out double to right-center in the 3rd inning. A bunt single by centerfielder Lindsey Taylor moved Brooks to third base and then Monica Zeringue loaded the bases after being hit-by-pitch. Catcher Brooke Turlich drove in Brooks with the go-ahead run off a ground ball to Christina Jaques at shortstop who then tagged Taylor, but could not complete the double play in time.
Brooks allowed just two hits and struck out two in the second game while Belhaven's Rebecca Rousseau (10-2) also went the distance with just two hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
The Badgers also had their chance in the first game, but came up just short of the sweep. After Jaques drove in Brittany Webb in the top 8th inning to put Belhaven up 1-0, Spring Hill had the tying run cut down at home by BU's Heather Pace at first base. SHC loaded the bases with two outs via consecutive singles Taylor and shortstop Monica Zeringue, but Turlich's fly ball down the left field line was tracked down for the final out by Blazer leftfielder Rian O'Bannon.
Brooks allowed five hits and two walks with no strikeouts in the opener while Sarah Burns (16-3) was the complete-game winner for Belhaven (37-5, 10-2) and gave up just three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Spring Hill (17-22, 3-7 GCAC) will travel to Birmingham-Southern College (21-7) for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
