The Spring Hill College softball team lost both ends of a conference doubleheader at Belhaven University by the scores of 6-4 and 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.
In the bottom of the 6th inning of the first game, Katie Sanders ripped a 1-out single to right-center to drive in the tying and winning runs as No. 6 Belhaven (45-5, 12-2 GCAC) rallied for a 5-run inning to pull out a 6-4 victory over the Badgers.
SHC had earlier built a 3-0 lead after two innings and stretched their advantage to 4-1 off a RBI-double by Brooke Turlich in the 5th frame, but could not hold on for the win.
Badger shortstop Monica Zeringue had two hits with a RBI and Sam Brooks took the complete-game loss, allowing 10 hits and no walks with a strikeout.
Belhaven was led by Sanders and Heather Pace with two hits and two RBI each while Brittany Webb and Christina Jaques added two hits apiece to the Blazer totals. Sarah Burns was the complete-game winner with seven hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Belhaven's Lizzie Hess opened the scoring in the 2nd inning with a run-scoring single, but the badgers answered with a run of their own in the 4th inning when Zeringue alertly scampered after a throwing error by Webb at second base.
The Blazers responded in the bottom of the frame with a run off the bat of Sanders who drove in Rian O'Bannon with a single just inside the left field line.
Brooks (9-18) also took the complete-game loss in the second game with six hits, a walk and a strikeout. Rebecca Rousseau was the winner for BU allowing four hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
Zeringue was the leader for the SHC offense again with two hits while Jacques tallied two more safeties for the Blazers.
Spring Hill (20-27, 5-11 GCAC) will next play at the 2010 GCAC Softball Tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala., on April 29 against a yet to be determined opponent.
