The Spring Hill College baseball team suffered a 13-3 loss to the William Carey University Crusaders in the opening game of the 2010 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium.
Things opened on a sour note for the Badgers when starter David Dupuy (3-6) gave up three runs off one hit, an error and two walks in the 1st inning. Carey (30-25) then erupted for a 6-run 3rd inning to build out a 9-0 advantage.
Jason Terrell provided the big hit for WCU in the 1st with a 2-RBI single up the middle while six Crusaders collected hits in the 3rd frame.
Josh Dannelley tripled to right center to drive in three runs for Carey with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning to end the game via the 10-run "Mercy Rule."
Dupuy went 2.1 innings for Spring Hill and surrendered eight earned runs off six hits, three walks, a hit batter and two strikeouts. Jim Roseberry (8-3) picked up the complete-game win, scattering six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
At the plate, Spring Hill was led by Andy McCall and Blake Nelson with two hits apiece while Brad Holstein launched his 13th homerun of the season off the left field scoreboard in the 6th inning.
Carey's Jordan Prout, Jacob Casey and Ian Sharp each rapped out three hits as the Crusaders pounded out 14 hits against the Badgers' staff.
On Friday, Spring Hill (26-23) will face the winner of Thursday night's Belhaven/Loyola match up at 2:30 p.m. in an elimination game and Carey moves on to face the LSU-Shreveport/Mobile winner at 6 p.m.
