The Spring Hill College men's golf team shot a combined 330 (+46) and find themselves in 29th place out of 29 teams after the first round of play at the 2010 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships on TPC at Deere Run on Tuesday afternoon.
The Badgers opened play on the back nine holes in the afternoon grouping and began with a +6 score through the first three holes led by junior Eddie Smith of Houston, Texas, who stood at an even par after three holes.
By the turn, Spring Hill had fallen into 25th position turning in 12 bogies and six double bogies as a team while managing only two birdies for a combined +21 score. Smith continued to set the pace for SHC with a +4 score of 40.
After 15 holes, the Badgers had fallen into last place at +33 with junior Chuck Balsamico from Covington, La., taking over the team lead with a +7 score of 67.
Balsamico carded a score of 80 (+9) to tie for 117th place out of 155 golfers in the individual competition while senior Will Loweth of Houston was 138th with a +12 score of 83.
Junior Javier Portal of Miami, Fla., was tied with Loweth at +12 and Smith also fell to a +13 score of 84 for 144th place in the standings. Freshman Joseph Webster of Trussville, Ala., closed out the day at 148th position with a +14 score of 85.
In total, the Badgers raked up 33 boogies, 11 double bogies and three triple bogies to just four birdies on the day.
Spring Hill will tee off in the second round of the 4-round event at 8:24 a.m. on Wednesday.
