BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Spring Hill College men's soccer team took a 2-1 road loss to the Lyon College Pipers to open the 2010 season on Sunday afternoon.
Lyon (1-0) opened the scoring in the 4th minute when Martel Reid-Warden of London, England, drilled a goal from just inside the top of the box.
The Pipers maintained the 1-0 cushion at the intermission off an 8-6 shot-advantage as SHC senior goalkeeper Cory Bronenkamp of St. Louis, Mo., had made one save while Lyon's Matt Kelly had stopped three Badger shots.
The Badgers roared back in the second period to tie the game off a goal by junior Bryce Privett from Bayside Academy in Fairhope, Ala., in the 53rd minute from about 15 yards out in front.
In the 74th minute, Lyon took the lead for good with a goal from eight yards out by Serhiy Zhykin from Cherkassy, Ukraine.
"We came out flat in the first half," said Tim Brooks about his first contest as the Badgers' head coach. "But we came out hard in the second half and tied the game up. We just have a lot of work ahead of us."
Bronenkamp ended the day with nine saves against 16 shots by the Pipers and Kelly made seven saves against 12 Badger shots.
SHC (0-1) will play its first home match of the season on Thursday at Library Field versus NCAA Division 2 opponent the University of West Florida at 5 p.m.
