The Spring Hill College men's soccer team defeated Talladega College 8-0 on Monday night at Library Field to pick up its first win of the 2010 campaign.
Senior Collin Gasparovic of St. Louis, Mo., opened the scoring for the Badgers in the 16th minute off a penalty kick following a hand ball in front of the goal. Five minutes later, freshman Patrick Culatta from New Orleans, La., scored off an assist by sophomore Andy Poveda of Niceville, Fla., who later added two unassisted goals of his own in the 26th and 34th minutes.
Freshman Frankie Pica of Ellisville, Mo., came off the bench to tally his first career hat trick by scoring in the 23rd minute with assists by junior Bryce Privett of Fairhope, Ala., and freshman Andres Garcia of Navarre, Fla., then adding an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute and teaming with Gasparovic for a third goal in the 49th minute.
The eighth and final goal was punched in by freshman Nick Link of Elizabethtown, Ky., in the 67th minute.
Overall, the Badgers outshot the Tornadoes 37 to 2 and took eight corner kicks while allowing none. SHC senior keeper Cory Bronenkamp of St. Louis made one save in a light evening of work as Talladega (0-2) keeper Joseph Barnett of Sylacauga, Ala., collected 12 saves.
The win was the first at Spring Hill College for new head coach Tim Brooks.
SHC (1-2) next will travel to Clinton, Miss., to face Mississippi College (0-1) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
