MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Spring Hill College suffered its first loss of 2010 at the hands of the Shorter University Eagles by a 3-1 score in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Divisional Crossover Tournament. Shorter took the match 25-15, 27-25, 23-25, 25-16.
Yiting Cao, a junior right side hitter from Shanghai, China, recorded 18 kills and 14 digs for the Badgers while Abbey Roam, a junior outside hitter from Lebanon, Mo., had 12 kills and 11 digs.
Freshman SHC setter Taryn Nash of Independence, Mo., dished out 40 assists and freshman libero Meredith Donald of Mobile's McGill-Toolen pulled in 18 digs. Freshman Sha Sha Buchanan from McGill-Toolen added two blocks and four kills to the Badgers cause.
Despite tallying 46 kills as a team, Spring Hill hurt itself with 31 attack errors for just a .095 attack percentage to go along with 11 service errors.
Shorter (6-1) was led by Ashley Walton with 10 kills, Jordan Corder with 37 assists, and Katie Van Hoffwegan had 16 digs.
Spring Hill (3-1) will stay in Montgomery and wrap up play versus Brenau University (0-10) at 10 a.m. and Columbia College (S.C.) (5-1) at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
