CLEVELAND, Miss. - Sophomore Sarah Uptmor from Cape Girardeau, Mo., scored both goals, including the game winner in the 88th minute, to lead the Spring Hill College women's soccer team to a 2-1 road victory over Delta State University on Wednesday afternoon.
Uptmor staked the Badgers to a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute with an assist from junior Katie Pendergast of St. Louis, Mo., and the game stayed that way until DSU tied the game with just five minutes remaining.
With 1:30 showing on the clock, Uptmor then pulled off her heroics when she ripped a ball off the top of the crossbar. The ball ricocheted straight up about 10 feet and maintained enough backspin on the way down that it bounced backward into the goal upon landing.
Senior goalkeeper Emma Pitchford of Ridgeland, Miss., picked up her second win of the season while facing just one shot on goal as the Badger defense and midfield continually stymied the Stateswomen's (2-4) offense.
Spring Hill (3-3) will host NCAA Division 2 foe the University of West Florida (2-2) on Wednesday, September 22 beginning at 4 p.m. on Library Field.
