The Spring Hill College volleyball team overpowered Faulkner University on Thursday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center with a 3-0 sweep by the scores of 25-9, 25-22, 25-14.
In the first set, the Badgers surprised Faulkner by taking a quick 10-4 advantage and then ended the match with a 10-point service run by freshman setter Taryn Nash of Independence, Mo.
The second set saw SHC build on the momentum of the first set and build a 6-1 cushion before Faulkner regrouped cut the lead to 11-8. The two teams traded points for the next several volleys, but SHC would win the race to the finish with a 25-22 score.
Set No. 3 opened with the Lady Eagles determined to answer the bell following two haymaker blows from the Badgers as the Faulkner clawed out a 4-1 lead and held on to the lead though the score of 9-6.
SHC was too much, however, and 5-point service run by freshman Sha Sha Buchanan of Mobile's McGill-Toolen put Spring Hill up 11-9 and they never looked back. Later, an 8-point run off the service of freshman Meredith Donald also from McGill-Toolen built out a 23-12 Badger lead and broke the back for the visitors.
Yiting Cao of Shanghai, China, ripped out 15 kills of the Badger's 41 kills along with 12 digs as Nash, dished out 31 assists.
As a team, SHC lodged a .423 attack percentage while holding Faulkner to just a .073 percentage.
Faulkner (10-11, 1-2 SSAC) was paced by Neysa Hernandez with nine kills while Lerin Hoback handed out 25 assists. In total, the Lady Eagles had 26 kills, three services aces, 29 digs and three total blocks
Spring Hill (10-2, 2-1 SSAC) will travel to New Orleans, La., on Friday to compete in the two-day Loyola Wolfpack Invitational beginning at noon versus Xavier University (La.).
