NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Spring Hill College volleyball team won twice at the opening day of the 2010 Hampton Inn Wolfpack Classic hosted by Loyola University (La.) at The Den on Friday stretching its current winning streak to seven matches.
In the morning match, the Badgers handled the Xavier University (La.) Gold Nuggets (4-11) in a 25-15, 25-13, 25-12 3-set sweep.
The first set of the day saw the Badgers build out a 9-5 lead off a 3-point service run by senior Emily Williams of Mobile's Murphy High School that allowed SHC to keep the Gold Rush at arm's length. At 18-14, SHC held the advantage and capitalized with a 5-point run to 23-14.
Spring Hill kept building on the momentum of the first set by bolting out to a 7-2 lead in the second frame. The cushion grew to a 21-9 SHC bulge before the set closed at 25-12.
Williams opened the final set with a 6-point service run and junior Yiting Cao of Shanghai, China, followed up with a 6-point run of her own as the Badgers claimed a 13-3 lead of the Gold Nuggets and coasted to a 25-13 final.
In the afternoon, SHC defeated the University of St. Thomas Celts (12-6) of Houston, Texas, by a 3-1 score (25-14, 21-25, 25-16, 25-18).
The first set saw the Badgers build a comfortable 15-7 lead before finishing at 25-14.
In Set No. 2 the Celts snapped an 18-set win streak by SHC with a 25-21 win after they jumped out to a 5-0 lead only to see the Badger regroup and take a 10-9 lead midway through the contest.
The Badgers then built out the lead to 13-10. St. Thomas remained composed and took an 18-15 lead that the Badgers cut to 23-21 but could not overcome.
SHC regained their poise in the third and fourth sets winning 25-16 and 25-18.
Spring Hill (12-2) will remain in New Orleans overnight to close out the tournament with a Saturday morning match with Dillard University (7-4) at 11 a.m.
