NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Spring Hill College women's tennis team had five individuals and two doubles teams compete at the 2010 USTA/ITA NAIA South Regional Champions at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center on Friday and Saturday.
In individual play, junior McCall Hedrick of Louisville, Ky., senior Lynne Fritscher of Covington, La., senior Gina Pambianchi of Cleveland, Miss., senior Paige Malone of Louisville and sophomore Tara Montegut of League City, Texas, each suffered first round losses, but Fritscher and Malone did advance to the second of play in the Consolation Bracket.
Fritscher defeated Maja Vuzem of William Carey University by a score of 8-5 before bowing to Anastasia Khabirova (6-2, 6-4) of Carey in the semifinals.
Malone was paired against teammate Montegut in the first round of consolation play and took the match 8-3, but then took a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Petra Pesic of Carey.
In doubles play, Malone and Fritscher lost 8-0 to Daniela Vukadinovic and Maja Plavsic of SCAD Atlanta in the first round while Hedrick and Montegut earned a bye into the quarterfinals. There they faced Jade Curtis and Kvetka Hajkova of traditional NAIA powerhouse Auburn-Montgomery and took an 8-0 loss.
The SHC women next play at the University of West Florida's Fall Fling Tournament on Friday, October 22, in Pensacola.
