NEW ORLEANS, La. - Spring Hill College freshman Colin Perry won the Consolation Round Championship at USTA/ITA NAIA South Regional Championships at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center on Saturday.
Perry, sophomore Jake Lyons of Jacksonville, Ala., sophomore Wil Amanor of Mobile's Murphy High School, senior Chris Link of Louisville, Ky., and freshman Jacob Neu of Lafayette, La., each competed at the event and lost in the opening round of play on Friday, but Perry, Amanor and Link each bounced back to win consolation round matches that afternoon.
Link defeated Jack Fisco of Loyola with a score of 8-2, but could not overcome William Carey University's Pedro Moreno who took the quarterfinal match 6-2, 6-0. Earlier, Moreno had defeated Neu 8-5 in the first round of consolation play.
Amanor defeated Loyola University's Carson Wahl 9-7 and then moved into semifinal action with a quarterfinal default win over Duffy Loel of Carey. Moreno continued his tear through the SHC players with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Amanor in the semis.
Perry, however, would avenge his three Badger teammates in the finals downing Moreno 8-3 to claim the consolation crown. Perry had reached the finals with wins over Joshua Washington of Loyola (8-0), Anton Ivanov of Carey (8-4) and Philip Mohr of defending NAIA National Champion Auburn-Montgomery (7-5, retired).
In doubles action, Perry and Link defeated Loyola's Fisco and Anthony Brandenburg (8-0), but fell to AUM's Boris Obama and Loic Didavi (8-1) in the quarterfinals. Lyons and Neu were swept by Carey's Jody Claasen and Toni Gauta 8-0 in the opening round.
The SHC men next play at the University of West Florida's Fall Fling Tournament on Friday, October 22, in Pensacola.
