The Spring Hill College men's soccer team stunned Auburn University Montgomery with a 3-1 upset victory at Library Field on Tuesday evening.
The Badgers opened the scoring in the game's 2nd minute of play when junior Josh Ledet of Fairhope, Ala., threaded a free kick into the right corner from 19 yards out at the top of the box following an AUM penalty on Vignir Benediktsson.
Defense then took over for both sides for the next 40 minutes of play in a physical contest, but Spring Hill struck again in the 43rd minute when John Tanner of Gulf Shores, Ala., scored off an assist by senior team captain Collin Gasparovic from St. Louis, Mo.
AUM (6-6-2, 0-1 SSAC) would quickly regroup and cut the SHC lead to 2-1 in the 44th minute when Chris Ross successfully completed a penalty kick following an incidental handball in the box by Gasparovic.
The second half was also a physical affair as both teams would tally 17 fouls apiece before the contest was over.
Ledet all but salted the match away for the Badgers when he scored in the 49th minute with a header off a beautifully executed free kick assist by junior Bryce Privett of Fairhope.
Senior SHC goalkeeper Cory Bronenkamp of St. Louis, Mo., made seven saves versus 19 AUM shots and AUM keeper Steve Keller made four saves against eight SHC shots.
AUM took six corner kick opportunities while the Badgers attempted just three.
Spring Hill's victory marked the first time in 15 attempts that the Badgers have defeated the Senators.
The Badgers (3-8-1, 1-0 SSAC) will host 9th rated Belhaven University (11-1-1, 0-0-1 SSAC) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Library Field.
