PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida (UWF) volleyball team handed the Spring Hill College Badgers their first shutout loss of the year with a 3-0 25-10, 25- 20, 25-19) decision on Tuesday night.
UWF (23-6), the No. 23 ranked team in NCAA Division 2, stormed out to 25-10 win in the first set behind extremely balanced play in which seven Argonauts scored with none tallying more than three kills.
The Badgers fought back in the second set and found themselves trailing by just one at 17-16 before UWF built out a 22-17 advantage and closed the match at 25-20.
Spring Hill took an early 6-4 lead in a back-and-forth third set, but UWF rallied to tie the set at 6-6. The Badgers answered again by stealing an 8-6 advantage, but the Argos re-grouped once again for a 9-8 UWF lead.
Down 11-8, the Badgers tied the set at 11-11, only to fall behind again at 14-12 and 18-15.
Junior Yiting Cao of Shanghai, China, led the Badgers with 10 kills and six digs while freshman Taryn Nash of Independence, Mo., handed out 20 assists.
Overall, the Badgers recorded 25 kills for an attack percentage of .090 and 30 digs.
Spring Hill (23-4, 5-1 SSAC) will host the University of Mobile (15-12, 5-1 SSAC) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center in a match that could decide the Southern States Athletic Conference West Division Championship.
