Badger Athletics - Spring Hill College News
Women's Basketball - Sat, Nov. 6, 2010
Spring Hill College's Kimarie Bock rolled in a lay up basket as the horn sounded to lift the SHC women's basketball team to a heart-stopping 95-94 win over Martin Methodist College at the University of Mobile Port City Tip Off Classic at the H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The high pressure full-court defense of the Red Hawks created early first half turnovers by the Badgers and resulted in a quick 10-5 lead for MMC. Spring Hill, however, responded with a fast break offense that broke the press and tied the game at 10 apiece.

A rebounded put-back by senior center Bock of Dunedin, Fla., with 11 minutes left in the half gave SHC an 18-17 lead as Bock's inside presence and the Badger break begin to pay dividends.

The Badgers maintained a three- to five-point bulge for the next seven minutes, until two Red Hawk free throws at 4:16 gave the lead back to MMC at 4:15.

Spring Hill trailed 56-54 at the half and then saw the Red Hawks expand their advantage to 60-54 with the first two buckets of the second period.

Quick hands on defense combined with the effective use of the break resulted in SHC tying the game at 64 with 14:32 on the clock and then two free throws by sophomore Kristen Rogers of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., moved the Badgers into a 71-70 lead at 11:30.

Senior guard Lynleigh Hughes of Hammond, La., hit junior forward Erica Wright of Pace, Fla., on a full court pass at 10:45 that Wright converted for the bucket and the foul to give SHC its largest lead to that point at 76-70. Freshman guard Bria Bohanon from Ponchatoula, La., then drained a 3-point basket from the right side as SHC put MMC in a 79-72 hole with 9:30 left in the game.

A midcourt steal and lay up by the Red Hawks' guard Tyffani Fenwick cut the SHC advantage to 90-88 with 1:45 and Fenwick then tied the game at 90 with a lay up at 50 seconds showing.

Wright made 1-of-2 free throws with 45 seconds left, but Young made a short jumper in traffic on the other end as MMC held a 92-91 lead with just 28.7 seconds.

Bock slipped inside for a bucket off a Wright entry pass with 14.2 seconds showing and Young answered with a free throw line jumper to make it 94-93 in favor of MMC (2-2) with just seven seconds left.

Wright briefly fumbled the ball at midcourt but was able to recover and find Bock under the basket who then watched her shot bounce twice on the rim and then roll in as the clock expired.

Bock scored 26 points with seven rebounds to lead all scorers while Bohanon and forward Jackie Higgenbotham each added 17 points. Wright pitched in 15 points and freshman guard Tempey Hamilton contributed 10 points.

For MMC, Fenwick scored 23 and Micah Anderson had 22 points in the loss.

As a team, SHC shot 47.6% (30-63) overall and 26.3% (5-19) from 3-point range, but the Badgers were out rebounded by the Red Hawks 46-35. MMC shot 43.8% (35-80) and made 2-of-5 (40%) from beyond the arc.

Spring Hill (2-0) will visit Dillard University (0-1) at 5:30 p.m. on Monday in New Orleans, La.
