NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Spring Hill College women's basketball team saw the Dillard University Lady Bleu Devils use a strong second half effort to take a 66-56 decision over the Badgers at Dent Hall on Monday evening.
The teams went to the halftime locker rooms tied at 28, but Dillard came out of the intermission hot and built a 39-34 lead with 13:12 remaining in the second half.
Dillard expand the advantage to 52-44 with a 3-point basket by Alexis Ruth at 6:23 and then took their largest lead of the contest at 56-46 off a 2-pointer by Jazzmin Smith with 5:00 on the clock.
Sophomore forward Jackie Higgenbotham of Birmingham, Ala., scored 17 points to pace the Badgers and freshman guard Bria Bohanon of Ponchatoula, La., had a 10-point effort.
Smith was a one-woman army for Dillard scoring 28 points with 18 rebounds while Ariel Mitchell pitched in another 12 points. Jessica Small also pulled in 10 rebounds for the home team.
Overall, the Badgers shot 34.6% (18-52) from the field including 38.1% (8-21) from beyond the arc, but suffered 12 turnovers and were outrebounded 45-24.
SHC hurt their own cause by allowing 15 second chance points off 17 offensive rebounds and making just 12 of 20 (60%) free throw attempts.
The Bleu Devils went 25 of 55 from the field (45.5%) and were 3 of 10 from 3-point land as a team.
Spring Hill (2-1) will host NCAA Division 2 rival the University of West Florida at 5 p.m. Friday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
