GULFPORT, Miss. - The Spring Hill College volleyball team opened the 2010 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Tournament with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) victory over Columbia College (S.C.) on Friday afternoon.
The Koalas (15-14) kept the first set close in the early going as the teams were knotted at 6-6 before a run by the Badgers gave them a 17-12 advantage.
Spring Hill wasted little time in racing out to a 14-7 lead in the second set and coasted to a 25-16 win.
Juniors Abby Roam of Lebanon, Mo., and Yiting Cao of Shanghai, China, led the Badgers as Roam scored 12 kills with 11 digs and Cao tallied 12 kills and 10 digs.
Freshman setter Taryn Nash of Independence, Mo., handed out 32 assists in the victory.
On defense, freshman Sha Sha Buchanan of Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic High School recorded seven block-assists and had two services aces.
As a team, the Badgers finished with a .311 attack percentage with 38 total kills, 49 digs, six aces and 11 total blocks.
Columbia was paced by Aarika Munro with 11 kills and Erica Allman with 19 digs. Overall, the Koalas scored 34 kills but were held to just a .130 attack percentage.
Spring Hill (26-4) advances to the semifinal round where they will meet the winner of the Shorter University (25-5)/University of Mobile (15-14) match on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
