The Spring Hill College women's basketball team defeated the Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons 55-52 at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Spring Hill took a 21-16 lead into the locker rooms after both teams played a sloppy first half. The Badgers, however, regained their second half focus a bit quicker than the Barons and built out a 10-point lead seven minutes in at 38-28.
Brewton-Parker continued to hang within striking distance and took their only lead of the match at 50-49 off a basket by Sharonta Williams with 1:51 left.
Sophomore forward Jackie Higgenbotham from Birmingham, Ala., answered on the other end with 48 seconds showing by dropping in a clutch 3-point basket as the Badgers took a 52-50 lead and never looked back.
Junior forward Erica Wright of Pace, Fla., led the way for the Badgers with 14 points and eight rebounds while freshman guard Bria Bohanon from Ponchatoula, La., also had 14 points. Higgenbotham scored 10 points for the Badgers.
Williams had 14 points for the Lady Barons while Jayla Moon had eight rebounds.
Overall, the Badgers shot 31.7% (19-60) from the field including 45.5% (5-11) from beyond the 3-point line. Spring Hill hurt itself with 18 turnovers in the face of 10 BPC steals.
The Lady Barons (3-6) went 20-of-64 from the field (31.3%) and were 1-of-12 (8.3%) from 3-point land as a team. The SHC defense forced BPC into 22 turnovers with 10 steals, but BPC out-rebounded the Badgers 52-32.
Spring Hill (4-5) will next at the University of South Alabama in an exhibition contest beginning at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at the Mitchell Center.
