CHICAGO, Ill. - The Spring Hill College women's basketball team lost to the No. 5 St. Xavier University (Ill.) Cougars by the score of 73-56 at the St. Xavier Holiday Tournament on Monday night.
Leading 6-2 just four minutes into the game, the Badgers then saw the Cougars build out a double-digit lead with 8:30 remaining in the first half, but kept the deficit within striking distance going into the intermission at 39-27.
St. Xavier took command in the second period, however, and earned a 61-38 advantage with 10 minutes left to play and led by as much as 25 points at 66-41 at the 7:30 mark.
Freshman Sha Sha Buchanan of Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic High School led the SHC effort with 15 points off the bench while sophomore Kristin Rogers of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., led all rebounders with nine boards.
Guard Alex Barone scored 23 for the Cougars with an impressive 8-of-10 shooting performance and sisters Marissa and Shalonda Young scored 16 and 14 points respectively.
Overall, the Badgers shot 39.6% (19-48) from the field including 27.3% (3-11) from beyond the 3-point line. The Badgers also committed 30 turnovers under the pressure of 22 steals by St. Xavier. On defense, SHC forced just 14 turnovers and took away only two steals.
SXU (8-4) shot 41.4% (29-70) from the field as a team and outscored the Badgers 50-28 in the paint and 27-15 off turnovers. SHC managed to hold St. Xavier to just 1-10 (10%) from 3-point land and rebounding was even at 40 apiece.
Spring Hill (5-8) will continue play in the tournament on Tuesday at 3 p.m. versus Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) (4-10).
