CHICAGO, Ill. - The Spring Hill College women's basketball team came up on the losing side of a 55-43 decision to Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) at the St. Xavier Holiday Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
The Badgers never led in the contest and scored a season's low 43 points against a stout Calumet defense. At halftime, CCSJ led 19-11 as neither team could find an effective rhythm on offense.
In the second period, however, Calumet used a 10-6 run to open the frame and build out a 29-17 advantage. From there, the Crimson Wave (5-10) managed to keep the Badgers at arm's length until SHC cut the deficit to just 36-31 with 6:25 remaining.
Unfortunately, poor shooting from 3-point distance along with crucial turnovers down the stretch spelled an end to the Badger rally as Calumet held a 53-39 advantage with just 30 seconds to go.
Junior forward Erica Wright of Pace, Fla., led the Badgers with 12 points.
Whitney Bonham and Chabria Survillion led a very balanced offensive attack by Calumet with 11 points each. Moneva Fields pulled down 13 boards for CCSJ to lead all rebounders.
Overall, the Badgers shot 25.9% (14-54) from the field including 23.5% (4-17) from beyond the 3-point line, but just 1-of-6 in 3-pointers in the final six minutes. The Badgers cut down significantly on their overall turnovers, committing 16 under the pressure of seven steals by Calumet. On defense, SHC forced 20 turnovers and took away only nine steals.
Calumet shot 32.7% (17-52) from the field as a team and 4-13 (30.8%) from 3-point land and outrebounded SHC 45-36.
Spring Hill (5-9) will wrap up play in the tournament versus Aquinas College (Mich.) (5-9) on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
