MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Spring Hill College senior center Nick Brown scored his 4th point of the game and the 1,001st point of his career off a layup with just two minutes left in the first half as the Badgers took a 56-41 conference loss at Faulkner University on Saturday afternoon.
With the game tied at 15 apiece at the 10-minute mark of the first period, both teams settled into a defensive mindset with Spring Hill using a zone while Faulkner preferred a man-to-man set. The Badgers held a slim 27-25 advantage at the halftime break.
With eight minutes left, Faulkner had stretched out a 6-point lead at 43-37.
Faulkner (6-13, 1-2 SSAC West) made the score 49-39 with 3:25 as the Badger offense slowed to a crawl in the second half and scored just 14 points in the final period.
The leading scorer for Spring Hill was junior guard Tyler Schwab of Panama City, Fla., with 14 points - all of which came in the first half.
De Hereford scored 11 for Faulkner's Eagles while Decorey Jones pulled in 10 rebounds.
Brown, who entered the match with 997 points in his 103-game career on The Hill, scored eight points to become the 33rd member of the SHC men's basketball 1,000 Point Club with 1,005 total points scored.
The Badgers finished the night shooting just 27.1% (16-59) from the field and 18.8% (3-16) from 3-point territory. SHC turned the ball over 16 times and allowed nine steals by Faulkner.
Faulkner shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field, but just 15.8% (3-19) from behind the 3-point line, but turned the ball over just 12 times against only four Badger steals.
SHC took down 39 rebounds and limited FU to only 33 boards.
Spring Hill (6-9, 1-2 SSAC West) will face archrival the University of Mobile (9-7, 2-1 SSAC West) on Thursday in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at the Rams' H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium.
