Badger Athletics - Spring Hill College News
Women's Basketball - Thu, Jan. 27, 2011
The Spring Hill College women's basketball team slipped to an 8-13 record overall on Thursday evening following a 68-65 conference loss at the University of Mobile.
Both teams shot the ball extremely well to open the contest as Mobile attempted to press the SHC offense and the Badgers played a man-to-man defense. A 3-point bucket by sophomore Jackie Higgenbotham from Birmingham tied the game at 15 with 13:20 to play in the first half. It was followed less than two minutes later by a trey from freshman guard Bria Bohanon of Ponchatoula, La., that gave the Badgers their first lead of the night at 18-17.
Over the next three minutes the teams traded the lead three times before UM built out a 5-point advantage with six minutes in the half. By the 3:30 mark, a spell of cold shooting by the Badgers combined with strong Mobile rebounding to give the Lady Rams a 31-22 lead. Nevertheless, Spring Hill did not panic and used its perimeter passing skills to whittle the deficit to 33-32 at the intermission when junior forward Erica Wright of Pace, Fla., connected on a buzzer beating layup to end the period.
Spring Hill grabbed a 34-33 lead 1:30 into the second half and the teams proceeded to trade baskets and the lead seven times over the next 6 minutes. But then the Badgers went cold again and Mobile's 6-foot-2 center Alice Honnery began to assert her control on the inside as UM went on a 2 minute, 11-2 run that resulted in a 58-50 lead for the Lady Rams with just six minutes left on the clock.
For the next five minutes Mobile kept the lead between six and eight points, but a breakaway basket off a layup by senior Lynleigh Hughes of Hammond, La., was followed by a bucket by Bock with 8.5 seconds showing to cut the hole to 67-65. Mobile's Morgan Melancon scored her only point of the night by making 1-of-2 free throws on the other end and SHC freshman guard Tempey Hamilton's attempt to send the game into overtime at 68 fell just short as the buzzer sounded.
Spring Hill was led in both scoring and rebounding by Bock with 22 points and seven boards. Bohanon contributed 14 points.
Honnery led all scorers and rebounders with a career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds. Adrienne Mackay scored 15 and Alyssa Lane added another 12 points for the Lady Rams.
The Badgers shot 47.6% (30-63) from the field and 25% (3-12) from 3-point territory. Spring Hill, however, was out-rebounded by the Lady Rams 43-30. SHC also forced Mobile (12-5, 3-1 SSAC West) into 19 turnovers with 10 steals by the Badgers.
For Mobile, the Lady Rams shot 44.8% (30-67) and 25% (3-12) from beyond the 3-point line while forcing 17 Badger turnovers off 14 steals.
The Mobile women's winning streak over the Badgers now stands at seven games with UM winning 12 of the last 13 matches between the two teams.
Spring Hill (8-13, 1-3 SSAC West) will host West Division leading Belhaven University (16-5, 4-1 SSAC West) on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
