Spring Hill College ended the 2008 baseball season with a 16-4 loss to Belhaven College in the semifinal round of the GCAC Baseball Tournament at Stan Galle Field on Friday afternoon.
Belhaven expanded a 3-0 lead into a 9-0 advantage with a six-run fifth inning and then poured on three more runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh inning. Blazer designated hitter Joe Scalzo led the charge with a four-for-four performance at the plate including two homeruns. Scalzo drove in five runs and crossed home plate four times. Catcher Brian McCormick collected three hits including two homers and five RBI while first baseman Bryan Bennett also added three hits to his totals with a run driven in.
On the mound, five different Badger hurlers saw action with starter Taylor Chadick taking the loss. Kyle Buescher was the winner for the Blazers with seven innings of work and accounting for all four Spring Hill runs off eight hits four walks and three strikeouts.
Center fielder Justin Harrison had three hits and an RBI for the Badgers. Third baseman Pat O'Malley added two hits to the Spring Hill cause. Spring Hill closes the year with a 19-37 overall record.
