PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Spring Hill College baseball team made the short trip down Interstate 10 on Wednesday afternoon to face NCAA Division II opponent University of West Florida at Jim Spooner Field and came away with a rain-shortened 5-1 loss to the undefeated Argonauts.
Both starting pitchers cruised through the opening inning setting both sides down in order, but West Florida struck first in the 2nd inning with a solo homerun to left by third baseman Josh Huggins off Badger freshman leftie Tyler Hutson (0-1).
UWF went up 3-0 in the 3rd off a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Leo Lamarche and a 2-out run-scoring single past first base by Zach Taylor.
Kevin Peters (2-0) faced the minimum number of Badger batters through his first five innings with a double play and a caught stealing erasing the only two hits by Spring Hill in those frames.
SHC reliever junior Stephen Herrington surrendered two runs in the 5th off a single sandwiched between two doubles to lead off the inning.
In the 7th inning, the Badgers greeted UWF reliever Josh Hollingsworth with a run following three hits including an RBI single by third baseman Brooks Bobinger before rained stopped the game after 6½ innings.
The Argonauts (5-0) were paced at the plate by Taylor with two hits and two RBI.
Hutson allowed three hits with two walks and no strikeouts in 3.2 innings while Peters went six innings with three hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
Spring Hill (2-4) will continue its current road swing with a doubleheader at Concordia College-Selma on Tuesday beginning at noon.
